A deal to bring former Newcastle United defender Mike Williamson to Gateshead is edging closer to completion.

Heed manager Steve Watson spoke after his side defeated Salford City 2-1 on Tuesday night and mentioned the potential deal for the 34-year-old as he praised his young side’s two wins to start the season. Ex-Newcastle player Watson said:

“It’s my job and Micky’s (assistant manager Micky Cummins) job, and Ben Clark’s job, maybe Mike Williamson if we can get him over the line this week, and some of the senior lads to keep everybody up to speed and up to their jobs and not get carried away.”

The former Wycombe Wanderers and Watford defender has made 134 appearances in the Premier League, which all came in his spell with Gateshead’s Tyneside neighbours Newcastle United. More recently, the towering centre-back played for Oxford United in League One.
