On-loan Magpies youngster satisfied with Gateshead debut

Newcastle United youngster Callum Williams was satisfied with his first appearance in a Gateshead shirt after helping them to a narrow 1-0 win over Guiseley.

The defender only completed a loan move to the International Stadium on Tuesday morning.

Within hours of agreeing a temporary switch across the Tyne, Williams was pitched into the National League fixture against the Lions.

Starting the game at right back, Williams helped the Heed to a clean sheet and their first win of the season, as Neill Byrne's second half goal sealed the three points for Neil Aspin's side.

Williams even walked away with the man of the match award, and he is hoping to help Gateshead compete at the top end of the National League during his five-month stay at the International Stadium.

Speaking to Gateshead-FC.com he said “I thought first half everything was quite even but the game opened up in the second half and we had the better chances,”

“I think I did alright today, it’s very different to where I’ve come from, you’ve got to fight it out to grind out results.

“It’s going to be a different experience for me but I think I adapted well to it and I’m looking forward to my time here.

“The goal while I’m here is to get as high up the table as possible, play well and to keep clean sheets.

“We might not play as well as we can as it’s a difficult league but as long as we get the result that’s all that matters.”

Williams will be hoping to replicate his debut win and performance on Saturday as Torquay United make the trip to the North East.
