The Express report that former England and Arsenal defender Sol Campbell is a frontrunner for the Maidstone United job.

The 43-year-old has yet to begin his managerial career but his coaching experience includes time spent as the Trinidad & Tobago national team’s assistant boss, where he worked under former Wrexham defender Dennis Lawrence.

Maidstone are currently without a permanent boss after the departure last week of long-serving Jay Saunders. His former assistant Steve Watt, who was Margate manager last season, has stepped into the role on a caretaker basis.

Former striker Craig Brewster joined Watt’s staff last week to assist.
