Gary Waddock is desperate to bring in a defender before Saturday’s FA Trophy game against Bedford Town after admitting Marvin McCoy is a doubt for the fixture.

The right-back suffered a head injury in last weekend’s 4-1 defeat at Harrogate Town, which forced him off at half-time and left Aldershot Town with only three fit senior defenders; Lewis Kinsella, Dominic Bernard and Josh Lelan. Midfielder Jake Gallagher filled in at full-back on Saturday and faces doing the same against Southern League side Bedford unless Waddock can bring in a defender this week.

To add to the Shots’ woes, Adam McDonnell, who has often been deployed at full-back in the past, also suffered a strain at Harrogate.

And while Matt McClure and Karleigh Osborne came off the very-depleted substitutes’ bench for the Shots last weekend, Waddock admits they are far from fit.

“With Adam I’m hoping it’s not as bad as we thought at the time,” Waddock explained. “With Marvin, we will assess him this week but he got a whack on the head and so we will see how he’s feeling.

“I hope he will be available for Saturday but we can’t take any risks, and it’s the same with Adam. The game is important but we can’t take risks.”
