Police are appealing for witnesses after a footballer allegedly attacked a referee at a game in Cornwall.

Referee Stuart Kane was reportedly pushed to the ground at St Austell Football Club on Tuesday.




Police said they were appealing for witnesses following an allegation of common assault.

AFC St Austell midfielder Marcus Martin has been charged with improper conduct by the Cornish Football Association.

He was sent off after a late penalty was awarded against his side in the 4-1 defeat against Tavistock.

Following the red card he is alleged to have assaulted referee Stuart Kane.

The Cornish FA has banned the former Exeter City and Truro player from all football-related activity while their investigation continues.

In a statement St Austell chairman James Hutchings said the club wanted to apologise “publicly to all in attendance at the game, the FA, the SWPL and also to the referee Stuart Kane, who is a well respected match official throughout Cornwall and Devon.”
