Neal Ardley has lavished praise on Notts County captain Michael Doyle and says the quality of his work often goes unseen.
The former Coventry skipper has been in excellent form in recent weeks and produced a superb second-half performance against Sutton, creating Kyle Wootton’s fabulous equaliser in the 1-1 draw.
But it is the midfielder’s defensive work which has caught the eye having been handed the key role of protecting the back four.
Magpies boss Ardley believes that his contribution is absolutely vital to his side and says his ability in possession should not be underestimated.
“We’ve got some good midfield options,” he said.
“Mitch Rose is powerful and athletic, Jim O’Brien has some great feet and sees a pass.
“They like to get forward, but the one thing that Doyley does which sets him apart is that he is a player who sees danger and mops it up.
“He very rarely gives the ball away and doesn’t want to be bombing on.”
