Atherton Collieries have confirmed that their Hallmark Security League match against Cammell Laird 1907 on Saturday 10th September has been designated as the club’s first ever Armed Forces Day.

A lot of hard work has already taken place by members of the club who have a forcesAtherton Collieries background, and it promises to be a fantastic day.

The chosen charity for the day is Combat Stress, known as ‘the veterans mental health charity’.

Admission to the match will be a ‘pay what you want’ scheme which has worked fantastically in the past. All money taken on the gate will go to the charity.

The Royal British Legion have been supportive and will be providing a bugler who will be on hand to perform the last post before kick off.

Veterans from all of the armed forces are encouraged to come down for the match and will be made to feel more than welcome.

Not only will this event raise money for charity, but it also gives the people of Atherton a chance to pay their respects to locals who fell during the Battle of the Somme, 100 years ago. Over 300 men and boys from Atherton lost their lives during the battle and the names of every single one of them will be displayed on a simplistic programme cover.

More details will be published in the run up to the match. In the meantime, please do spread the word and help the club raise as much money for charity as possible.
