Macclesfield Town manager John Askey has confirmed that former Premier League trio Shay Given, Wes Brown and Alex Bruce are currently training with the club.

Given and Bruce both made appearances in the Premier League last season before being released by Stoke City and Hull City respectively.

Former Manchester United defender Brown spent last season with Blackburn Rovers but left the Ewood Park club when his contract ended.

The trio bring with them a wealth of top flight experience.

Between them they have made just under 1,500 professional appearances and have earned 161 international caps.

Former Newcastle United and Manchester City keeper Given is second in the Republic of Ireland’s most capped players, with only striker Robbie Keane able to better Given’s 134 caps.

Brown (pictured right during his time with Sunderland) is a former Champions League winner with Manchester United and has twenty three England caps. wes brown

And Bruce has two caps for Republic of Ireland and gained another two with Northern Ireland when a change in FIFA eligibility rules allowed him to change his allegiance.

Speaking to the Macclesfield Town website Askey said “They have been training with us and they are great to have around.

“It says a lot about the Football Club that they came in to training one day, and then came in the next and the next.

“That shows that they are enjoying what we do and that we are doing it the right way.”

Alongside Askey in the Silkmen dugout is another former Premier League player.

Former Newcastle United, Everton and Aston Villa defender Steve Watson is the club’s assistant manager.

He is a former Magpies team mate of goalkeeper Given and he praised the trio for their impact during training sessions.

He said “It’s great for the lads to have them here. Wes and Alex are doing their coaching badges so helped to run a session yesterday whilst Shay has been taking the goalkeepers”

It is believed that the trio will take part in training with the Silkmen squad but there are no plans for them to play in any pre-season fixtures.

The Silkmen host EFL Championship club Derby County on Saturday in a pre-season friendly and kick off their National League season with a trip to Wrexham on Saturday 5th August.
