Neil Aspin has continued his rebuilding at Gateshead by making a thirteenth new signing of the summer.
Young Barnsley left back George Smith has joined the Tynesiders on a one-year contact.
And he leaves his hometown club having made 44 appearances for the Tykes.
He spent a month on loan at Crawley Town earlier this year and had originally been offered a new contract at Barnsley.
That was withdrawn following discussions between the board and coaching staff at the Yorkshire Club.
After capturing the signature of a promising young player, Aspin admitted there could be room for yet another new face.
“I’m delighted to bring Smith to Gateshead, a player who has played a good number of games for Barnsley for one so young,” said Aspin.
“We’ve got 18 players so there was room for a couple more. He will add competition in the defence and when we have around the 20 mark we’ll have enough to compete.”
