Barnet have completed the signing of Latvian goalkeeper Rihards Matrevics on a two-year deal.
Towering at 6’7″ tall, Matrevics joins the Bees having most recently been in the academy at West Ham United. He made his Premier League 2 debut last season for the Irons U23 side and was consistently on the teamsheet throughout his season with the Under 18’s. He played against the Bees in last year’s pre-season friendly between the two sides.
His career began in his native Latvia, spending nine years at SK Babite. He has represented his national team at U19 and U17 level, with a total of 22 caps for the Sarkanbaltsarkanie. He was called up to the U21’s as recently as April.
The 19-year-old joins following a trial period which has seen him feature in the friendlies against Fulham U23’s, Maldon & Tiptree, Ipswich, Potters Bar, his former side West Ham and Hampton & Richmond.
The Latvian youngster, speaking after signing for the club, is pleased to have secured a deal at The Hive London.
“I’m very happy. It’s been a while, I’ve been here for a few weeks now and I’ve been looking forward to this day. I can move on a look forward to the season.”
“It’s a good team atmosphere here, this group has got a lot of potential this season and I’m looking forward to working with them.
Manager John Still is happy to welcome an exciting young prospect to the club.
“We needed to bring another goalkeeper in. Mark (Cousins) has come in and supporters have seen in pre-season that he’s a very, very good goalkeeper.
“We wanted someone under him, but do you go for an experienced one that can push him all the way or do you go for one that you think can grow.
“Well, we’re fortunate enough to get Rihards, who has recently been at West Ham where I’ve seen lots of him. He’s a Latvian youth international and when the opportunity came to get him, we pushed the button and I’m absolutely delighted.”
