Conor Branson has signed for Alfreton Town after Altrincham accepted an offer from their Vanarama National League North rivals for the experienced 27-year-old.

Alty say the deal ‘represents a good piece of business’ for the club, with Alfreton paying an undisclosed fee for Branson after manager Billy Heath identified the Robins’ combative summer capture from Bradford (Park Avenue) as the ideal candidate for strengthening his squad.

Branson, a versatile midfielder who can play the anchor role or operate further forward, made a positive early impact for Alty after joining in the summer, scoring goals and figuring prominently throughout the pre-season programme.

He made five starts and a another three appearances as substitute, once the league campaign got underway, but opportunities have been limited of late, with skipper Jake Moult’s welcome return to full fitness further increasing competition for places in central midfield.
