Promotion-chasing Hitchin Town ensured their season will end with silverware whether they go up or not after coming from behind to beat Bishop’s Stortford in the final of the Hertfordshire Senior Cup.

Flying high in third in the EVO-STIK League Southern’s top flight but not assured of a play-off spot yet with three games still to go, the Canaries retained the county silverware they won last season with a 2-1 win over the relegated National League South side at the Vauxhall Road home of Hemel Hempstead Town.

In the final after receiving a first round bye as holders and knocking out Hadley, St Albans and Cheshunt along the way, the EVO-STIK League Southern Premier Division club came out on top despite being underdogs on paper at least with a brace from Will Wright, pictured with the cup.

After the Canaries exacted revenge for a penalty shoot-out defeat three years ago in their last meeting in the final of the Herts Charity Cup at Letchworth, their opponents congratulated them on Twitter for dominating a game they “deserved” to win.

The Canaries bounced back from a 3-1 home loss against champions-elect Chippenham Town on Saturday to become the fifth EVO-STIK League Southern club so far this season to win county silverware alongside two other winners from the top flight on the night after EVO-STIK League Southern Division One Central clubs Fleet Town and AFC Dunstable led the way last week with triumphs in the Northants Senior Cup and Bedfordshire Senior Cup competitions respectively.

While Kettering Town needed extra-time and penalties to overcome EVO-STIK Northern Premier League Corby Town at Northampton Town’s Sixfields Stadium in the final of the Northamptonshire Senior Cup, Jason Matthews celebrated signing off as manager of Weymouth by guiding the Terras to a 1-0 extra-time victory over Gillingham Town in the final of the Dorset Senior Cup at the Avenue Stadium.

The Canaries head to Banbury United on Saturday in the EVO-STIK League Southern’s top flight before entertaining Biggleswade Town at Top Field on Easter Monday.
