Stalybridge Celtic have signed young striker James Roberts on loan from League One side Oxfird United until the end of the season.

Born in Stoke Mandeville, Roberts joined Oxford from Wycombe Wanderers when he was 16 and immediately impressed everyone with his goalscoring exploits.

He was leading scorer for the youth team and it came as little surprise when he was offered a professional contract in May 2014.

He marked his senior debut with two goals in the FA Cup at Grimsby Town and scored the club’s goal of the season in 2014/15 with a spectacular effort at Plymouth Argyle.

He was signed on loan for Chester FC by new Stalybridge boss Steve Burr on October 2015 and has since had two spells on loan with National League South outfit Oxford City and a month with League Two side Barnet towards the end of last season.

He joins in time to be considered for Burr’s first home league game in charge of since taking over at Bower Fold – a vital `six-pointer` against Bradford Park Avenue.
