Barkingside chairman Jimmy Flanaghan has confirmed that the club will not be applying for promotion this season.

In a statement released on the club’s website Flanghan confirmed the reasons behind the decision.

It read “Following a discussion between manager Gus Gulfer and myself last week, we are in agreement that the club will not be applying for promotion this season.

I just want you all to know its not because we lack ambition, there are a few reasons which I will outline.

Firstly when we achieved promotion previously back in 2012/13, we were on such a roll as a club, we had such a collective bunch of guys, even though I never planned for promotion, I felt it was wrong to deny those players the opportunity, so that was why we accepted it, but the club had never really prepared itself for it.

It was very enjoyable being in the Ryman League, but it also brought a lot of added pressures both on and off the pitch, because of the type of club we are.

I obviously want to get promotion again, but I would like to be better prepared for it, both on and off the pitch.

We have some very, very technically gifted footballers at the club this season; however we have had a lot of comings and goings. We are very erratic in terms of performances and we have also had a lot of injuries, but the main reason for our form is our shocking disciplinary record at the club, which is the worst it has ever been since I have been at the club.

We have acquired some players who have terrible attitudes and a lack of personal discipline. We have highlighted those and have allowed some of them to leave.

I have total faith in my manager, he has assembled some fine players, we just need to add some ingredients to the mix, I have told him to take his time in doing this,.

I am also trying to improve things in terms of support, infrastructure, sponsorship etc off of the pitch.

We are in three cup competitions so lets concentrate on them, rebuild our togetherness and team spirit that the club is renowned for, Gus needs & Gus deserves our support, let’s get our spirit again.

Thank you for all your patience in what is a transitional period for the club.

Jimmy Flanaghan”
