Paul Green’s recent move to Boston United came about via his long-standing connection to Pilgrims boss Craig Elliott.

The former Derby County and Leeds United midfielder was part of the Crewe Alexandra side that ultimately won promotion last season from League Two via points per game. Green, capped 22 times by the Republic of Ireland, had wanted to stay with The Alex for 2020/21, but when he was released, his familiarity with Boston United manager Elliott helped lead him to the National League North side for the coming campaign.

Speaking as part of his in-depth interview with this site, the 37-year-old explained:

“Yeah, we’re both from the mighty Pontefract! We probably first crossed paths when I was only about nine.

“He used to be down at Ponte Collieries and we used to have a few little kickabouts, played 5-a-side together and that. When we see each other, we have a good chat about football, how he’s been getting on and how I’ve been getting on, and (joining Boston) just materialised from that really.”
