The former France international Pascal Chimbonda made a surprise appearance for Blyth Spartans at the weekend.

The ex-Tottenham Hotspur, Wigan Athletic and Sunderland defender came on as a substitute in the final few minutes of Spartans’ 2-2 friendly draw at South Shields.

The 39-year-old, who was in the France squad which reached the 2006 FIFA World Cup final, made headlines last season as he signed for Washington FC of the Ebac Northern League Division One.

The National League North side reiterated, however, that the one-time Blackburn Rovers man is not set to sign for the club.

They tweeted:

It’s been said on here a few times, but we repeat, Chimbonda is only with the club to keep up his fitness. #HowayBlyth
