Cinderford Town captain Josh Nelmes ended up in hospital on Saturday night with a suspected broken nose and cheekbone after paying the price for his bravery during his side’s 3-1 reverse at St Neots Town in the EVO-STIK League Southern’s top flight.
The Foresters centre-half was taken to Bedford hospital after taking a boot to the face while heading clear during a goalmouth scramble 15 minutes into the second half.
Although Nelmes was keen to battle on with the Foresters 2-0 down at half-time, he could not see out of his left eye and had to leave the field at Rowley Park.
Nelmes took over as club captain from Keiran Thomas this summer after committing to Cinderford Town for the 2016-17. The defender, who lives a stone’s throw from The Causeway, had looked set to join last season’s Cinderford boss John Brough at his new club North Leigh and took the captaincy from Thomas after he left for Gloucester City.
