Talented non-league winger Matt Briggs has signed a new contract at Dorking Wanderers, despite recent attention from Stoke City.
In March, the Potters reportedly joined a list of Premier League and Championship clubs who had been tracking the 20-year-old student, who is studying aerospace engineering at the nearby University of Surrey.
Crystal Palace, Portsmouth, Millwall and Ipswich Town have also had a close look at the winger, described by Dorking’s chairman and manager Marc White as the “hottest prospect outside the Football League”.
But the former Wallsend Boys club captain has decided to extend his stay with the newly-promoted Isthmian League Premier Division side until the end of the 2018-19 season.
“I think at the moment Briggs is the hottest prospect outside the Football League,” White told Get Surrey. “We wanted to reward his level of performances and to be honest we wanted to protect both parties, both Matt and the club.
“We are under no illusions; at some point Matt will move into professional football and we don’t want to hold him back from that. What we want to do is make sure any move is what is best for both Matt and Dorking Wanderers.”
