Play-off chasers Cray Wanderers say defender Grant Basey has been putting in extra training over the final weeks of the Ryman North season to run the London marathon for the second year in a row in memory of his mum and the Institute of Cancer Research.

The former Charlton Athletic, Barnet, Peterborough United and Wycombe Wanderers full-back and dead ball specialist completed the 26.22 mile run last season while at VCD Athletic and is looking forward to setting off again on Sunday 24 April.

Wands officials are hoping their own supporters and others will back the 27-year-old’s efforts at the 2016 Virgin Money London Marathon by visiting the online donations page he’s set up to support the charity.

Basey ran his first fundraising marathon after losing his mother to cancer in January 2015 and a club spokesman said: “As you can see from his page this is a cause very much close to his heart and any contributions made will be going to a worthy beneficiary.

“We would like to wish Grant all the very best with his training and the race itself and look forward to hearing and perhaps seeing Grant in action.”
