Alvechurch have named Darren Byfield as their new manager.

The former Aston Villa and Sunderland striker takes up the job after spending last season in charge at Walsall Wood, where he led his team to 2nd place in the Midland Football League Premier Division. The Wood only finished runners-up to Ilkeston Town by virtue of goal difference.

Byfield’s arrival comes after the departure of previous Alvechurch boss Ian Long to Stourbridge. The 42-year-old ex-Walsall and Rotherham United player moved into management with Redditch United in 2016.

He took over at Stratford Town in May 2018. The former Jamaican international’s new club finished 4th in last season’s Evo-Stik League South Premier Division Central, ultimately losing out to King’s Lynn Town in the divisional play-off final.
