Redditch United boss Paul Davis has told his players not to use the league table as a genuine barometer of opposition teams’ qualities, as it is “still very early in the season” and teams have the potential to improve.
The Reds face bottom side, Hitchin Town, on Saturday, before heading to local rivals, Alvechurch, on Bank Holiday Monday. Both sides currently sit behind Davis’s side in the standings, but with only three matches gone and his side registering their first win last weekend, he knows teams’ fortunes can change quickly and his team will need to be focused:
“Hitchin are the only team in the league without a point so far, but they should’ve had at least one, if not more, so we are under no illusions as to how difficult it’ll be starting three away games in a week by going there. They have lots of experience of this level of football and being in-and-around the play-offs.
“Alvechurch on Monday will be another tough test. They have had recent success with a similar nucleus of players and they play a certain way that suits those players. As we saw during pre-season, they are more than capable of mixing it at this level and I expect them to be a mid-table team by the end of the season.”
The Reds boss confirmed that there are no fresh injury concerns ahead of the weekend’s double-header. Both Will Davidson and Tom Winters returned to training on Thursday night and will be assessed further before Davis picks his squad; however, Tom Fishwick will be out for five-to-six weeks after surgery on a fractured cheekbone.
