Mark Jermyn insists Dorchester Town’s 5-1 defeat at Weymouth in the Dorset Senior Cup semi-final on Tuesday night was a result that had “no impact on us whatsoever”.

The Magpies’ chief blooded a number of younger players from the squad’s reserve side and tasked them with making the step up, and was pleased with the efforts they showed against a strong Terras’ line-up. Speaking about the defeat, an upbeat Jermyn told Echosport: “To me, Tuesday night was not a problem.

“It was a result that has no impact on us whatsoever. It was all about our youngsters and seeing if we can reach levels of progression for them. It was only when they started to get tired and they lost their shape towards the end of the game that Weymouth’s quality came through. I think some of the young lads can take a lot of experience from the game. It was the first full 90 minutes that we have had the chance to look at Simon Proffitt really. He stood out.”

“I thought Sam Pashen did very well up until about 60 or 70 minutes. Dan Morris is 17 years old and to be playing against people like Stewart Yetton and Ben Thomson, I felt that he coped very well. For the best part of 65 minutes the young lads did themselves justice. They tried really hard and, at times quality showed, but they did superbly.”

Speaking about Weymouth player-manager Jason Matthews’ team selection, county town chief Jermyn added: “He had designs on making the game more competitive than we wanted to and that’s fine. I think we can reflect on how well we are doing in the league and certainly our achievements so far this season. I think it showed the intentions of our club and the intentions of their club.

“They are gunning for experience and we are all about local players and the youth coming through. I think it shows for local people and local players that, if you are a youngster and you do want to progress, Dorchester is the place to be. I think the youngsters at our club know that if they play well they will get an opportunity.”
Dorchester’s next test is a trip to Hitchin Town in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division on Saturday (3pm).
