EBAC Northern League club Dunston UTS have turned to a former club hero to replace manager Billy Irwin.

Wednesday morning brought confirmation that former defender Chris Swailes is returning to the club as their new manager.swaz

Swailes won the FA Vase with Dunston in 2012, playing his part in their 2-0 win over Northern League rivals West Auckland Town at Wembley.

Since then he had a short spell as assistant manager at Hamilton Academicals and he continued his afinity with the FA Vase last season, scoring in Morpeth Town’s stunning 4-1 win over Hereford FC in the Final.

Now Swailes returns to the UTS Stadium as manager, with his first game in charge coming in Wednesday night’s Durham Challenge Cup tie at Brandon United.

It was also confirmed that Swailes will be assisted by veteran midfielder Steve Bowey, who has Northern League managerial experience from his time at Newcastle Benfield.

The club confirmed the appointments in a statement released on their website.

It read “Dunston UTS Football Club are delighted to announce the appointment of Chris Swailes as First Team Manager.

‘Swaz’ needs little introduction to our supporters as he was part of our FA Vase winning side of 2012, and became a firm favourite of our fans in his playing days with us.

He has more recently been involved with Morpeth Town FC, picking up yet another Vase medal earlier this year, in their victory over Hereford; this was preceded with a short spell as the Assistant Manager of Hamilton Academicals in Scotland.

Chris replaces the retiring Billy Irwin, and takes his first game in charge of the team on Wednesday, at Brandon United in the Durham Challenge Cup.

Chris is extremely pleased that Steve Bowey has accepted the role of his Assistant Manager, and we wish them both the best of luck for the remainder of the season and beyond”

Swailes takes over a Dunston UTS side sat in seventeenth position in the Northern League Division One table, just four places and four points above the relegation zone.

His first Northern League game in charge of the club will come on Saturday as they host nineteenth placed Ryhope CW.
