Russ O’Neill has stressed that every game is crucial for Alfreton Town as the season comes to a climax.
Saturday’s 3-0 home defeat to Darlington was the Reds fifth in a row and a fifth successive game without scoring. It leaves Alfreton six points off the drop with nine points still available.
Russ spoke to Amar Sharma after Saturday’s Darlington defeat:
“We came up against a strong, physical side and they had too much for us. We sat back too early and they came onto us and hit the woodwork twice in the opening ten minutes. We survived their early pressure and we came back into the game and started to play some good football.”
“We were once again un-done by a defensive error which has been the downfall all season, we concede too many goals and some of them are gifts like their first goal. We had a good spell before their goal and it was a sucker punch to concede at that moment.”
“The second half was leggy from us, we looked tired and we didnt look like scoring throughout. They pressured us again and scored a further two goals and it was another difficult afternoon.”
Despite not finding the target in the last five games, Russ was confident in securing safety and re-finding the Reds form:
“The situation hasn’t changed, we are six points clear with three games to go. Confidence hasn’t been there from us and its obviously showed, we haven’t scored in our last five. It is concerning but our focus is the next game, we need to stick together and we need to head to Tamworth and get a result, we need to stop the slup we are in and make sure we stay in control of ourselves and the situation.
“We’ve had a lot of injuries and we can add Sam Smith to that list after Saturday but we need to stay strong and see what we can do today. I have full confidence we will stay up, it’s another important game for us today.”
