One non-league story that has made the headlines was the bizarre red card handed to one-time Arsenal youngster Sanchez Watt for Hemel Hempstead Town last night.
The former Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday loanee had netted for the Tudors in what finished a 2-0 win for the Vanarama National League South promotion hopefuls against East Thurrock United. However, in the later stages of the game, the 27-year-old disputed a decision to give a goal kick to East Thurrock.
As the referee proceeded to issue a yellow card for dissent, he asked for the one-time Colchester United man’s name, and after being told ‘Watt’ repeatedly he interpreted it as further dissent (‘what?’) and brought out the red card. It was only after Hemel captain Jordan Parkes came over to explain that Watt’s red was downgraded back to a yellow.
