Central defender/defensive midfielder Sam Hird has joined Barrow.

Hird, 31, joins on a free transfer from Alfreton Town on an initial deal until the end of the season.

Born in Doncaster, he spent his spent the first steps in football at Aston Villa, before joining Leeds United at the age of nine. He spent eight years at Elland Road before joining his hometown club Doncaster Rovers after a brief loan spell there.

He appeared over 150 times for Donny in the football league, scoring three goals. Chesterfield was his next stop, joining them in June 2012 and he was immediately made captain.

Hird went on to make nearly 250 appearances for the Spireites, striking up a partnership in central defence with Bluebirds boss Ian Evatt.

He won the 2015-16 Chesterfield Player of the Year but was released by the club in the summer of last year. He joined Alfreton in October last year.
