Exeter City boss Matt Taylor admitted that Hartlepool United deserved to go through to the third round of the FA Cup.
Josh Hawkes’ effort early in extra time was the only goal of the game as Pools booked their spot in the third round and a trip to League One Oxford United.
Jack Sparkes was the sent off for a second bookable offence with six minutes of extra time left as the Grecians exited the competition to a side 36 places in the league below them.
Speaking after the game, Taylor said his side were bitterly disappointed to have exited the cup but gave Dave Challinor’s full credit for their win and said on the night they deserved it.
“Full credit to Hartlepool,” Taylor said. “We wanted to get as far as we could in this so are bitterly disappointed, but we cannot change that now and won’t be making excuses about the conditions and travel.”
