Shaw Lane AFC have revealed the tragic news that defender Daniel Wilkinson has passed away after suffering a suspected heart attack during their game against Brighouse Town.
Wilkinson, who joined the Evo-Stik NPL First Division South club from Rushall Olympic in the summer, was treated on the pitch at St Giles Road, with medics performing CPR for more than half an hour.
An ambulance then arrived and rushed the twenty six year old to Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax.
However early on Tuesday morning the club’s chairman Craig Wood released a statement via their Facebook page confirming the sad news that Wilkinson had passed away.
The statement read “It’s with great sadness that we have to announce the tragic loss of Daniel Wilkinson who has sadly passed away after collapsing on the pitch during the game last night.
Our thoughts and prayers are with him family and friends at this time.
The club would like to thank everyone for their heartfelt messages and thoughts that we have received throughout the night.
There are no more words at this time.
Craig Wood – Chairman”
The football community was quick to pay their respects to Wilkinson with supporters, clubs and leagues from around the non-league pyramid taking to Twitter to show their support.
Vanarama National League leaders Lincoln City tweeted “Our thoughts and condolences go to @SLAquaFC and the friends and family of Daniel Wilkinson at this difficult time #RIP”.
Premier League club Hull City, where Daniel started his career, tweeted “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and all at @SLAquaFC at this sad time. Rest In Peace Daniel”
And another of Wilkinson’s former clubs, Rushall Olympic, paid their respects by tweeting “Our thoughts are with the loved ones of Dan Wilkinson and all at @SLAquaFC. A nicer guy and a more committed footballer you would not meet”.
