Former Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion midfielder Darren Carter has left Vanarama National League club Forest Green Rovers by mutual consent.

Carter made his debut for Rovers against local rivals Cheltenham Town in September 2015 and played a key role in helping the club reach the Second Round of the FA Cup in the same season.Carter FGRFC

The midfielder scored the opener in their 2-1 win at AFC Wimbledon in the First Round and they were knocked out of the competition in the next round by Oxford United.

Carter helped the club reach the Vanarama National League promotion final in the 2015/16 season, although they were beaten by Grimsby Town in front of a crowd of over 17,000 at Wembley.

This season Rovers finished in third position in the National League and face Dagenham and Redbridge in the play-off semi-finals, although Carter will play no part after his departure was confirmed.

A club statement read “Forest Green Rovers can confirm that Darren Carter has left The New Lawn with the midfielders contract having been terminated by mutual consent.

The former Premier League man has been a regular feature at the club since making his debut on the day he signed against Cheltenham Town in September 2015.

He made a total of 65 league appearances for FGR and played a major role in helping the team reach last season’s National League promotion final at Wembley.

The 33-year-old was offered a new one-year contract when Mark Cooper was installed as manager at the end of the 2015-16 season, and he’s gone onto make 29 league appearances this term.

His final Rovers appearance came at the start of April when he appeared as a substitute in a 1-0 win away win over Guiseley.

Forest Green would like to take the opportunity to thank Darren for his fantastic service in his time at The New Lawn and wish him all the best with his future career”
