Hartlepool United have added former Newcastle United and Rotherham United midfielder Conor Newton to their squad.
Newton put pen to paper at Victoria Park on Thursday and becomes the eighth signing of the summer by Pools boss Craig Harrison.
The twenty five year old spent the last two seasons with Cambridge United but was released at the end of the season.
The midfielder began his career in Newcastle United’s academy and progressed to their reserve team during his time at St James Park.
In January 2013 he joined SPL club St Mirren on loan until the end of the season and helped the Buddies win the Scottish Communities League Cup, scoring in a 3-2 win over Hearts in the Final.
He returned on loan to St Mirren for the 2013/14 season and scored four goals in thirty seven appearances.
He was released by Newcastle United at the end of that season and joined Rotherham United on a two-year deal and went on to make twenty two appearances before leaving for Cambridge United ahead of the 2015/16 season.
He was a regular feature in the U’s squad that finished eleventh in League Two last season but was released in June.
Now he becomes the latest new addition to Harrison’s Pools squad as they target an immediate return to the Football League.
It is understood that Hartlepool beat a number of clubs to Newton’s signature, including North East rivals Gateshead.
