Tonbridge Angels have announced the signing of Doug Loft.

It sees a u-turn for the former Port Vale captain, who had been announced last week as signing for Margate.

The club explained: “Doug Loft has had an offer of a contract to play in a higher division and therefore has decided not to join Margate.

“Whilst disappointing news, we wish Doug well on the next chapter of his career.”

The 34-year-old ex-Gillingham and Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder will instead be playing next season in the National League South, with Tonbridge manager Steve McKimm telling the club’s website:

“Doug’s CV, as you can see, speaks for itself. This is an important signing for us, as he will bring experience and knowledge to our midfield areas, which will be to the benefit the whole squad.”
