He moved to Cardiff City in 1981, spending three years with the Welsh club before moving to Sunderland.

Bennett become a mainstay of the Roker Park club’s back four, making 369 appearances over eleven years, scoring 23 goals.

After leaving Sunderland Bennett went on to play for Carlisle United, Scarborough and Darlington.

He also had a spell managing Darlington between August 2000 and October 2001.

Bennett is also actively involved in the ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ organisation which he joined in 2003.

Bishop Auckland are currently sat in sixth position in the Northern League table and have applied for promotion to the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League First Division North.

In order to secure promotion they will have to finish above the league’s only other applicant South Shields, although the Mariners sit four places and eighteen points above the Two-Blues.
