Nowadays, most footballers when they are about to retire switch continents to play in lucrative leagues for the last ‘big paycheck’. The MLS and Asian leagues (particularly China, Japan and now India) come to mind. However, there are a few stars who have taken a different route, instead of making the big journeys to other continents, they decided to wind up their careers playing non-league football. Below, we share with you some of the top stars who are now plying their trade in non-league football. Apart of course from making it possible for local communities to meet them on a weekly basis, these former stars are also helping to improve the non-league football brand something which is evidenced by the fact that non-league football matches are now being widely considered by the best football betting sites uk.
Lomana Lua Lua (Tilbury)
Lomana Lua Lua is best known in the Premier League for his backflip celebration. The Congolese striker featured for a number of Premier League teams during his prime. However, at 37 now, Lomana Lua Lua is winding up his playing career and he is doing so at Tilbury. Lua Lua’s first game for Tilbury came against Hashtag United! Fun fact, during his time at Colchester, Lomana Lua Lua used to play with Joe Keith who now happens to be his manager. The incredible thing though is that now, Lua Lua is lined up on the same pitch with Joe Keith’s son!
Sylvan Ebanks-Blake (Halesowen Town)
The former Manchester United striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake is now playing for non-league side Halesowen Town! Incredible isn’t it, more so considering that he is just 32. Sylvan Ebanks-Blake was in the Manchester United academy and he even managed to break into the first team. However, he failed to make a single first team appearance in the League though he managed to do so in a few cup game. In a bid for regular game time, Sylvan joined Royal Antwerp where his impressive performances alerted Wolves. For Wolves, Sylvan was able to win two Championship Golden Boot awards before featuring in the Premier League for two seasons. From Wolves, Sylvan also featured for Plymouth and Chesterfield (where he has a terrible time failing to score even a single goal in a whole season). At 32, Sylvan is still young enough to play league football but somehow, he finds himself in non-league.
Marc-Antoine Fortune (Chesterfield)
Playing for Celtic and then West Brom, Marc-Antoine Fortune has played in different top-level leagues and competitions. During his prime, Marc-Antoine Fortune played in the Premier League, Ligue 1, Eredivisie, Europa League, Championship and League One. However, nowadays he fields himself playing for non-league Chesterfield.
Jamie O’Hara (Billericay Town)
It seemed as if Jamie O’Hara was ready to call it quits when he appeared on Celebrity Big Brother in 2017. However, that was not the case, the former Tottenham and Portsmouth midfielder actually started his club search soon after his appearance in Big Brother. Offers were limited for his services so he took the one to play non-league football with Billericay Town. Jamie found himself playing with other Premier League stars at Billericay Town in Jermaine Pennant and Paul Konchesky. The other two have left though but Jamie is still going strong for Billericay Town!
