Newcastle United defender Callum Williams has signed for Gateshead on loan until the end of the season – this is subject to FA ratification.
The 20-year-old, who can play at centre-back or right-back, played 20 times for the Heed already this season, picking up two Man of the Match awards before returning to his parent club at the start of the month. He will now wear the number 26 shirt and be available for selection in Saturday’s National League match against Maidstone United at the International Stadium.
After re-signing Williams, Gateshead manager Steve Watson said: “We liked Callum first time around and we hoped to keep him for the rest of the season initially.
“But obviously he’s ambitious young lad so quite rightly he wanted to go back to Newcastle just to see where he stood with them. Now he’s explored his options and decided to come back here which is our gain.
“He’s a talented young lad who’s versatile and works hard for the team and he’s the type of individual that we want in our squad. We’ve got three centre-backs who can play right-back but it’s not a natural position for any of them so it makes sense to bring in a more natural right-back like Callum to balance the squad out a bit better as well.”
