The highly-rated 27-year-old is most comfortable in an attacking central midfield role but can also play wide on the left if required and was an ever-present for The Tynesiders last term. Pools boss Matthew Bates quickly earmarked the talented Northern Irishman as a summer transfer target but he’s had to work hard to fend off the interests of other clubs to land his man.

McLaughlin began his career with Newcastle United but really made a name for himself after switching to York City in 2011 with whom he twice won at Wembley in the FA Trophy and the National League Play-Off Final. The County Antrim born star was snapped up by Grimsby Town in 2013 and he played over 50 times for The Mariners before joining Gateshead in 2015 where he has been a reliable presence in the engine room ever since.

A former Northern Ireland Under-21 international, McLaughlin underwent a medical early on Tuesday morning before heading off to training to link-up with his new team mates for the first time.

He is now the fourth new recruit to join Pools this summer following the arrivals of Myles Anderson, Niko Muir and Andrew Davies.
