Gateshead FCs long-serving General Manager Mike Coulson has been named as the club’s Head of Football Operations.
The new role will see Coulson take charge of all off-field footballing affairs not covered by Ben Clark and his management team. Coulson will support the club’s coaching staff in a way that will allow them to perform to their full capacity and focus purely on managing the team so that they have the biggest and best impact on the pitch.
Gateshead’s new Head of Football Operations has a wealth of footballing experience at the club. Coulson first became involved at the Heed in 1992 as secretary and treasurer of the supporters club before being appointed as the club’s assistant secretary in 1999.
Since then, Coulson has had roles such as club secretary, chairman and a brief spell as owner in the early 21st Century and was instrumental in saving the club during its darkest and most uncertain days. Coulson is the club’s representative at all National League meetings and AGMs and also helped set-up Gateshead’s Under-19s team, establishing them in the Northern Alliance league and overseeing the development of several players into the first-team.
As a result of Coulson’s appointment, Operations Director Michael Williams’ day-to-day role at the club will change to focus on community and foundation projects as well as the set-up of a new Gateshead FC Academy which is expected to launch in the near future. After a six month voluntary secondment at the club, Williams will also be focusing back on his other business interests.
“It was always my plan to take a small step back from the day-to-day running of the club after six months in order to concentrate on my other business ventures,” Williams said. “I work at Gateshead on a voluntary basis and while I will still be committing time to the club by working on various projects in the community and beyond, my role will not be as full-on as it has previously been.”
“Thankfully, I will be leaving the running of all footballing operations at the club in extremely capable and experienced hands of Mike Coulson. There is no person with more experience and knowledge about how Gateshead operates as a club.
“With Mike in charge full-time, helping our new managerial team, I am sure Gateshead Football Club can continue pushing in the right direction.”
Sporting Director Chris Hawes has also stepped down from his voluntary position at the club, leaving Coulson in sole charge of all off-field football matters at Gateshead.
