Gateshead have confirmed the signing of defender Tom Devitt following a successful trial, subject to international clearance.
The 22-year-old has been training with the Heed since the start of the month and featured in their pre-season matches against Newcastle Benfield, Guiseley, Livingston and most recently Blyth Spartans, where he set up Luke Armstrong for his hat-trick in a 3-1 win at Croft Park.
Devitt joins after completing a four year footballing scholarship in the United States where he most recently featured for Lionsbridge FC in Virginia.
After signing for the club and returning to his native Tyneside, the young defender commented: “It feels fantastic, I’ve been in playing with all of the lads for a while and I feel at home already.
“Most of the players are like me, my sort of age so we’ve got a young group but we’re all really excited for the season. I’m from (Newcastle) originally, I’ve been away in America for a few years but it’s fantastic to be back home at a club like Gateshead.
“After working with the boys, Steve and Micky over the past few weeks they’ve been unreal and made me feel really welcome so I couldn’t wait to sign.
“The National League is a fantastic standard and but I’m up for the challenge and looking forward to testing myself.”
And after getting plenty of minutes under his belt in pre-season already, Devitt is eager for the league season to get underway.
“Pre-season has gone really, really well so hopefully we can carry that on into the season and do well starting this Saturday at Maidenhead and continue that throughout the year,” he added.
“Even though I’ve just signed, it’s good to have had a full pre-season here, already know all of the lads well and know how the gaffer wants us all to play before the start of the season.
“This season I’m obviously looking to do well individually but the most important thing is that the team does well and is successful on the pitch.
“We’re a really young group, a really hungry group and we’re determined to go out there and prove a lot of people wrong this season.”
Devitt will wear the number 18 shirt and due to his time in the USA, will have to wait for international clearance before featuring for Gateshead in the National League.
