Haydn Goddard has signed a one-year deal which sees him continue his football at Ilkeston.
Haydn, who made his first team debut under Kevin Wilson, was one of the stars of last season run in the FA Youth Cup and became a regular in Andy Watson’s squad towards the end of the 15/16 season.
Haydn Goddard: “I’d made my first team debut under Kev and Chetts, so when Gavin came in as manager at the start of last season, it felt like I was going to have to prove myself all over again.
During the first part of last season, I never thought I’d get a chance to play in the first team, but after Andy took over from Gavin and then players were released, I saw it as a good chance to prove myself.
“I think it could benefit me a bit, Paul has been here all the time I’ve been at the club and Steve Welsh was my manager in the Academy side, so they already know me and how I play, it certainly doesn’t feel like I’ll be starting from square one again.
Obviously I’ll have to prove that I’m worthy of a place, just because it’s Paul and Steve in charge, nothing is guaranteed.”
“I need to improve my tackling and shooting for this season, I definitely need to be scoring goals from my position. In my past goal scoring was a bigger part of my game, I used to play as a striker, but now being a centre midfielder I need to get more used to being in that position, I think sometimes I play it a bit too safe, rather than trying to get forward, which I need to do more of.”
“It’s going to be good having Luke and Liam in the squad this season, helping us out with game management and give us more strength in the team. All of the younger players will be able to learn a lot from them.”
