For 71 years the history books would tell you Gosport Borough’s biggest win was 14-0 against Cunliffe Owen in 1945. Not anymore!
Sadly, only a handful of spectators were witness to club history being re-written as a near-full strength Boro side demolished Portsmouth Saturday League Widbrook United 19-1 in an astonishing game at the Aerial Direct Stadium on Tuesday night.
The fact that Alex Pike’s men progressed into the second round of the Portsmouth Senior Cup was almost irrelevant. The scoreline which eclipsed the old record will now be part of club folklore.
There were eight different goalscorers as Boro’ crushed their visitors who themselves got in on the act with Rob Lett’s 8th minute goal the highlight of their evening, along with a remarkable display from their substitute goalkeeper in the second half who kept the score down to 19 with a string of stunning saves!
For the record, Gosport`s scorers were Warren Bentley (pictured) and Dan Wooden with four apiece, TJ Cuthbertson and Ollie Bailey with hat-tricks, and Sam Pearce, Jamie Barron, Brett Poate and Mike Carter with singles.
