Torquay United player-manager Kevin Nicholson was philosophical in defeat after watching his side lose 2-0 to Macclesfield Town.
“I thought the best team won” said Kevin.
“Macclesfield were allowed to be as good as they were. I didn’t see it coming; we looked like we were in a good place. We were well prepared; we had our game plans. We looked more worried about losing than what we were trying to win it.
“We were on the back foot. Unfortunately if you are on the back foot against a side that is high on confidence -they’ve also had a good pre-season and they took advantage of that.
“It was good finishes for both goals, but very preventable. The build up to it was more than preventable on our front. If we are being completely honest they could’ve had more than two.
“I don’t think we troubled the [opposition] goalkeeper with more than a couple of half-chances. It was very disappointing in that way and the lads are very disappointed in there because I think they all knew that this was a chance to start the season strongly and kick on from our pre-season.
“In the grand-scheme of things it might be a good thing. It may shake us into that realization that if you are going to have success at this level you have to win the fight first.”
