Hampton & Richmond Borough have signed right-back Matt Young, 25, as injuries continue to stretch Gary McCann’s resources.
A youngster with Spurs and Southampton in his early days, Young has also played in the Football League and National League, including a spell with Woking. Last season, he was with Chelmsford City.
He goes straight into the squad for Saturday’s game against Concord Rangers and may well get a start after the news this week that Tom Jelley will be out for a protracted spell with a hip injury. He is likely to need an operation.
McCann said: “It’s typical of Tom that he’s been playing in pain for some time now without complaining. I thought he hadn’t reached the level of which he is capable and now I know why – he has just got on with the job. This will require a period of rest.”
The manager already has Luke Ruddick, Louis Soares, Cole Brown, Shaun McAuley and Tyrone Lewthwaite in the treatment room, while others are playing with niggles.
“It’s the unfortunate result of playing so many games in such a short spell,” said McCann. “This Saturday will be our 10th league game in a little over a month. We’re not alone in carrying so many injuries. I know, from speaking to other managers, it’s a problem that other clubs are having to deal with, too.”
