Heaton Stannington secretary Ken Rodger, has been given an Unsung Hero of Sport award for more than 60 years of service to football.

The award was presented by Sport Newcastle in a ceremony at Northumbria University on November 10.

Ken started in junior football in 1953 before moving to the Northern Amateur and Tyneside Amateur leagues.

A back injury curtailed his playing career. He then became a referee before moving into football administration. He also gained an FA coaching badge.

He was appointed as secretary for Ryton FC in 2005. Heaton Stannington manager Derek Thompson asked him to join the club as secretary for the 2014/15 season.

Earlier this season three officials from Esh Winning were also presented with long-service awards.

Alan Morton, Charles Ryan and David Parkinson were given their awards on behalf of Durham County FA and the FA for 35 years of service to the club.
