Evo-Stik League Southern Hitchin Town have thanked the thirsty fans and organisers who raised more than £300 for the club at their inaugural Hitchin Beer and Milk Mile.
The Canaries say fans helped raise £317 for their ground improvement fund at the sporting community day at Top Field on Sunday 14 August.
Sponsored by Satchells Estate Agents and the brainchild of Kate Dellar, the fundraising challenge saw more than 40 entrants of all ages in different categories running four laps around the ground and drinking beer or milk at the end of each one with the fastest times winning prizes.
The three hour competition was also staged to bring together sporting organisations from across Hitchin to strengthen links between them and organisers say it is set to be repeated after the success of the first one which was covered extensively by the local media.
A Canaries spokesman said: “Last Sunday’s Beer and Milk Mile was a great success. Over 30 entrants helped to raise a profit of £317 and it seems to have been a really enjoyable occasion.
“It is hopefully going to be an annual event and I am sure it will gain in popularity. Many thanks go to Kate Dellar and her team of volunteers who made the day run so smoothly and the event gained very good coverage in the local press.
“The proceeds go in to our ground improvement fund with the floodlights only the first item on our agenda. The new PA system is next up and then the dug outs are going to be upgraded. This will all cost plenty of money so please continue to support all our fund raising initiatives for the ground improvement fund.”
* After receiving a bye in the first round of the Hertfordshire Senior Cup the Canaraies have been drawn away to Sawbridgeworth or Hadley in the second round which is due to be played in the week commencing 5 December.
