Defender Liam Hogan has agreed a one-year deal with Gateshead to become manager Neil Aspin’s third signing of the summer.
The 27-year-old in now reunited with the former FC Halifax Town boss, having spent three seasons The Shay between 2010 and 2013.
Hogan spent last season at Tranmere Rovers, although injuries limited his playing time to just 18 appearances.
He also counts Fleetwood Town and Grimsby Town amongst his former clubs.
Aspin spoke to the club’s official website and admitted he was pleased to be reunited with his former defender.
He said: “I’ve always kept tabs on Liam. I rate him highly, and I know that when he was outstanding when he was playing last season.
“Tranmere were very disappointed when he got injured, but I’d like to think that with a clean run, he could really do well for us.
“He is mobile, he has really good pace, he is a good competitor, and his attitude is first-class.
“I’ve had to move quickly. Tranmere were keen to keep him, but we’ve managed to steal a march on them.
“It hasn’t been done behind their backs, because I get on very well with Gary Brabin, but we were in a position where we could move quickly.
“I think it shows that we want to do well. The players we are signing at the moment are of a good calibre, and I’m happy with what we have done so far.”
Aspin has also added former Kidderminster Harriers striker Reece Styche to his squad.
The twenty seven year old spent time on loan at Macclesfield Town last season and scored a hat-trick against the Heed in the Silkmen’s 3-0 at the International Stadium in March.
And his new manager is eager to see him make a big impression on Tyneside.
He said: “I want him to do the business on the pitch, but I also see him as someone who can do something in the dressing room as well.
“We had a good team spirit last season, but I see him as someone who can be a little more vocal and livelier.
“I want to have a few players with a voice off the pitch – I think we were a little too quiet on and off the pitch last season.
“I’m bringing him in to stir things up a bit, and hopefully he is the right character to do that”
