Former Tranmere Rovers captain Steve Jennings signed for Barrow yesterday, made his debut, and was sent off.

The 33-year-old midfielder, who also counts spells at the likes of Motherwell and Coventry City amongst his career, was announced as a new signing for Ian Evatt yesterday. The former Southport man was soon into the Vanarama National League action, replacing the injured Jason Taylor just before half-time as Barrow hosted Chesterfield.

On 83 minutes, Jennings was dismissed after two yellow cards in quick succession. It was a night to remember for the Bluebirds all the same, though, as they came from behind for a 3-2 win against Martin Allen’s Spireites.

It was a sweet victory for manager Evatt, who was a firm favourite in his Chesterfield days as a player. The 36-year-old left at the end of last season having been in caretaker charge towards the very end of their ill-fated League Two campaign.
