Torquay United’s fifth successive pre-season win, 3-2 against Swansea City Under-23s, has boosted manager Gary Johnson’s belief that the Gulls will have the firepower to challenge for promotion in the National League.

United had to withstand a second-half fightback by the young Swans, after goals by Asa Hall, Armani Little – with another top-drawer free-kick – and Manny Duku had given them a 3-0 lead by half-time.

Johnson said: “You learn from every game about your own team, but I think we’ve got a group, especially with two or three additions to come, to try and get us back in the Football League and I am very excited about that.

“I haven’t seen anything yet that’s changed my mind.”
