Nearly is not good enough for Gary Johnson, even if it is against a Barrow AFC team now seven points clear at the top of the National League, and Torquay United’s manager hinted that he is already preparing to make some long-term squad decisions in the wake of a what-might-have-been 2-1 defeat against the soaring Bluebirds at Holker Street.

Johnson said: “I am judging players now as to whether the ones who are out of contract will be offered a contract or not – that’s how you have to look at it.”

Johnson made a raft of similar decisions at this time last year, tying eleven players down before United went on to clinch the NL South Championship.
