Ramsbottom United have completed the signing of 27-year-old goalkeeper Martin Fearon.
The former Ram, who played a huge part in the clubs’ promotion from the Evo-Stik Division One North, playing in the play-off final against Bamber Bridge, arrives from Skelmersdale United.
A former professional with Accrington Stanley, Fearon has enjoyed a glittering career so far at the likes of Burnley, Chester City, Lancaster City and Salford City. He played ten games at the end of the 2013/14 season for the Rams, never once being on the losing side.
Rams joint manager Mark Fell says the club have one of the North West’s top keepers.
“I’ve known Martin since he was an apprentice at Accrington, he was in fact one of the first student’s I ever taught. We know exactly what we are getting with him, simply a top class keeper, we’ve been luck to have Charlie Albinson recently, but we knew his deal was only until the new year and when we heard there may be an opportunity to get Martin, we jumped at it.
Rammy fans will remember his stunning save deep into added time in extra time at Bamber Bridge in the play-off final which cemented promotion in 2014 and made Martin a part of Rammy folklore! Following his departure from Skelmersdale, the man who heads up Accrington Stanley’s community trust said the opportunity to return to the Riverside was too good to turn down.
“I am really pleased to be returning to Ramsbottom United and want to help the club return to the Evo-Stik Premier Division. I know what the club is all about having had a successful time on loan here a couple of years ago and I am looking forward to getting started.”
Fearon is expected to make his return to the Rams squad in the Boxing Day fixture at Radcliffe Borough.
