Captain and goalkeeper Grant Shenton has announced that he will be leaving Evo-Stik Northern Premier League club Ramsbottom United at the end of the 2015/16 season.

Shenton confirmed the decision in an emotional statement released on the club website following the 0-3 defeat to Marine.

The statement in full read:

“To every Ramsbottom United fan reading this and non-Rammy fans who may have paid ramsbottom unitedyour hard-earned money to watch me play the game I love, thank you. But this is goodbye to the Rammy faithful and all associated with the club – my last game as a player will be on the 23rd April against Ilkeston.

I have some great memories playing for this club, promotions, winning games and sadly a recent relegation I have learned and achieved more in my time here than I could have ever wished for.

When I first signed, I was a young, naive kid and I leave a young man with a young family with two children on my own. So, for those of you who have been here since my first day, it’s been a great journey.

Now though my time has come to go onto pastures new. I want and need a new challenge, to push myself in my own career and I believe by leaving I can potentially achieve that. Ramsbottom will always have a place in my heart and when I can, I will always visit.

So, thank you to everyone and please come say hello in the clubhouse. I’ll have a chat and a pint with anyone who would like to.

All the best for the future
