Merthyr Town have announced that chairman Howard King is to step down.

King, a former FIFA referee, will also be resigning as a board member.

The Martyrs are currently spending a season away from Southern League action, effectively opting to mothball the club for 2020/21 due to the financial implications of the current pandemic.

King’s resignation comes following a period of ill health, and he told the club’s website:

“Holding this position has been a privilege. I have numerous underlying health issues that I have taken into consideration, and whilst I am now starting to feel a little better in some ways, I am nowhere near back to anywhere close to 100%.”
